How I Got Into Acoustics and Into and Out Of Technical Societies

Strange as it may seem in retrospect, I never even heard of "acoustics" during my student days, even though these extended over fourteen years, undergraduate through graduate, including a nearly four year interruption for military service. And here I am just about to complete my thirty-eighth year in the field. To paraphrase an old joke: a few years ago I couldn't even spell akustishen - and now I are one.
