Sexual Tourism and Social Panics: Research and Intervention in Rio de Janeiro

Recent research in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has challenged the predominant view of the sexual tourism as a social universe that can be cleanly divided into “victims” and “victimizers.” Brazilian public policies, however, continue to be based on this binarized stereotype and have often attempted to repress prostitution, which is legal in Brazil, in the guise of protecting prostitutes, resulting in violations of sex workers' human and constitutional rights. Faced with this situation, the authors have allied themselves with the Brazilian Prostitutes' Network, presenting their research to the group as a means of helping it fight for more rational and just policies with respect to sex workers and their clients.
