Semiconductor sales hit record $204 billion in 2000

As Internet infrastructure and communications markets drove the industry, worldwide semiconductor sales reached $204 billion for 2000, representing a 37% growth rate over 1999, an all-time high for the industry, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), San Jose, CA. For the month of December, though, semiconductor sales totaled $17.9 billion, a decrease of 2.1% from November's figures (see illustration below) but an increase of 21.6% over the $14.7 billion logged a year earlier. This decrease is in line with normal year-end patterns, said the SIA.
