Starting a new business has never been easy. In 1957, when Sam Marshall launched this magazine, then known as Semicon-ductor Products (Fig. 1), no one yet knew what the semiconductor industry would become. Looking back, there is a certain air of inevitability to it all: in 2007, we know the answers to the insoluble technical problems and have progressed beyond many of the wrong turns and blind alleys. But from the perspective of 1957, the only clue to the future was that the transistor, developed just a decade before, had already created a cluster of suppliers and a handful of important applications.
