The authors offer an overview of published works devoted to the study of the material composition of shungite rocks from various deposits of Karelia and Kazakhstan. A comparative estimate has been made of the experimental results of investigations, by means of X-ray phase analysis and IR-spectroscopy, of shungite rocks (brecciated, massive, weathered), products of their demineralization (Zazhoginsk deposit in Karelia) and "pure" shungite of the Shunga deposit. In the rocks studied the carbon is concentrated in a substance of graphite-like structure. The weathered rock contains, apart from the graphite-like substance, compounds with methylene and carboxyl groups. Pure shungite consists mainly of a bright substance of black color with the structure of amorphous carbon and small amounts of inclusions of rusty color, which contain impurities of organic substances with hydroxyl and other functional groups in the graphite-like material.
