摘要

An overview of the engineering properties and the failures due to natural disasters of regional soils whose distributions are widespread in Japan is introduced. Local soils such as volcanic ash soil, decomposed granite soil and highly organic soil which have been called by unusual soils or problematic soils have the highly wide variability and complexity of the issues related to their mechanical behavior. This paper describes that there are still many regions where the engineers suffer from unexpected phenomena caused by large earthquakes, heavy rainfall and a rapid change of air temperature, and that further research for these soils should be urgently conducted in the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
