One of the most pertinent questions a business manager can ask is the following: 'How can I make my firm succeed where another fails?' A key concept of the approach is the notion of lever (Messnarz and Tully 1999). Levers are means used by a firm to increase its resource generating ability, just as a mechanical lever is used for increasing the force applied to an object. The analogy goes even further. Just as a force can be applied in many different ways to the object resulting in a similar displacement, the use of the different levers can increase the resource generating ability of the firm resulting in similar business benefits. Finally, the resources are used to increase the assets of the firm and to reward employees and stakeholders.
