I was fortunate to be a part of the Fifth International Workshop on the Twin Peaks of Requirements and Architecture workshop at 37th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), Italy on May 17th, 2015. My article, Is Requirements Engineering Inherently Counterproductive?, co- authored with Dr. Paul Ralph, University of Auckland got accepted at this workshop. I presented my article and was able to garner immense interest from the community of requirements engineering and software architecture. The Twin Peaks model is about the synergy and relation between a system's requirements and its architecture. The focus here is to discover requirements while concurrently exploring multiple architectural decisions. My doctoral research aims to improve the process of requirements engineering by mitigating the ill-effects of human cognitive biases. My article at Twin Peaks workshop explores the possibility that requirements engineering, as described in a traditional life cycle model of software engineering, may be deleterious to software engineering success. Evidence suggests that while sense making aspect of requirements engineering may improve software design performance, increased problem structuring might degrade design performance. My main motivation to attend this workshop was to get the reaction and opinion of the RE community towards the feasibility of my topic which would direct my future thesis. In the following sections I would first summarize the various essential points of discussion and agreements during the one-day workshop, followed by illustrating the many benefits gained from attending the Twin Peaks workshop.
