Twenty-one pilots turned out for the combined Sport and Club Class National competition sponsored by the Chilhowee Soaring Association May 3-12, 2011. The stakes were a notch higher for the some of the club class pilots, as this contest would determine the makeup of the U.S. Team Above: Twenty-one slick ships gathered for the 2011 Sport/Club Class Nationals. to compete in Argentina next year. Would the seasoned father/son pilots - and former U.S. Team members -Manfred and Sean Franke smother the two challengers Robin Clark and Sarah Kelly-Arnold, or would we see a race to the wire by four excellent contenders? Those watching the weather in the weeks preceding the contest could be excused for worrying about the chances for good soaring conditions. The flying in the East in 2011 had been sub-par so far, not to mention the vast tornado outbreak that occurred only a few days before the contest. Fortunately, the 10 days of competition had only one rainy day, and a total of seven official scoring days with two others being "almost" days.
