The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the world's preeminent movie-related organization, is composed of more than 8,000 accomplished professional men and women working in cinema. Its mission is to recognize and uphold excellence in the motion picture arts and sciences, inspire imagination, and connect the world through the medium of motion pictures. The Academy's Science and Technology Council leads the organization's science and technology activities with the following objectives: 1. To advance the science of motion pictures, in support of the art, and foster cooperation for technological progress. 2. To sponsor publications and foster educational activities that facilitate the understanding of historical and new developments, both within the industry and for a wider public audience. 3. To preserve the history of the science and technology of motion pictures. 4. To provide a forum and common meeting ground for the exchange of information and to promote cooperation among divergent technological interests, with the goal of increasing the quality of the theatrical motion picture experience.
