Counting Iraq's dead

As many as 98000 Iraqis may have died as a result of the March 2003 invasion of their country by coalition troops. This is the estimated number of excess deaths which have occurred up to September 2004—mostly as a result of violence-according to a study published in The Lancet last October. The research team, from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, based their findings on a cluster sample survey carried out in Iraq in September 2004. 33 clusters of 30 households were interviewed about births and deaths since January 2002, providing the team with data for 14 months before to the invasion and 17 months afterwards.
