A dust mite, no bigger to the human eye than a tiny dot, crawls over a micro-machine developed by Sandia National Laboratories. The microelectrome-chanical system, or EMES, turns gears at hundreds of thousands of revolutions per minute. Each of the gears is smaller in diameter than a human hair and one-hundredth the weight of the dust mite. The latest laboratory micromachine also incorporates an electronic brain.
