'Soft' median adaptive predictor for lossless picture compression

the median adaptive predictor (MAP) is widely used in many modern-day lossless picture compression algorithms, including the new JPEG-LS international standard. The basis of MAP is the crisp median operator. In this article we describe how we may fuzzify the MAP by compressing several test pictures and show the new predictors always perform better than the crisp MAP.
