Signalling and train control with the wind at its back

Digitisation is causing significant winds of change in many industries. The digitisation of established system environments has always been at the centre of my activities during my ten years at Scheidt & Bachmann to date. A lot has happened during this period: all ticket information is now stored in the cloud rather than on the ticket. Point-of-sale systems run in a tablet PC browser. And a smartphone is all you need to pay your parking fee. At the beginning of last year, I was full of anticipation when I joined our signalling systems division. I quickly found out that the world of signalling and train control systems is genuinely unique! System generations spanning more than 100 years ensure the 24/7 operations of critical infrastructure. Safety as a precondition of everything we do was a new, very fundamental condition to me. There can be no doubt that the digitisation of entire signalling and train control system architectures constitutes a very special challenge.
