When he first signed on as a weather observer with the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943, Thorndike Saville Jr. had no idea he would spend the next four decades helping to spearhead this country's work in coastal engineering in research - first with the Beach Erosion Board and then with the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
