Schiffko to design European research ice ship

Waertsilae's design company Schiffko is to design a revolutionary new European research icebreaker with deep sea drilling capability for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. The contract comprises the initial design concept, general arrangement planning, and full tender documentation for a ship that will facilitate multi-discipline research in ice and open water conditions.For Arctic and Antarctic operation, the Aurora Borealis will be able to navigate autonomously in pack ice of up to 4.5m outside the summer season - a capability that has so far eluded polar research vessels.
