Metamorphoses of “Shakespeare's Lost Play”: A Contemporary Japanese Adaptation of Cardenio

This article considers what happens when the global phenomenon of Shakespeare is inflected by a local adaptation of one of his works in a culture and time far distant from its moment of creation. The example used is a production of Shakespeare and Fletcher's Cardenio in modern Japan.
