Reservoir Characterization of Pulsed Explosive Vapor Generators

Computer controlled explosive vapor generators for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), cyclo-l,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine (RDX) and pentaerythritol tet-ranitrate (PETN) were developed, built and calibrated at the Idaho National Laboratory beginning in 1991. The original design was patented in 1995 (US patent 5,452,600). Since that time, the vapor generators have gone through multiple changes in an attempt to improve their reproducibility and ease of use. The reservoir is the component that has undergone the most extensive changes. Tests were recently conducted to characterize the current reservoir design in an attempt to improve consistency in calibration coefficients between heads containing the same analyte and to automate the reservoir loading process.
