An overwhelming proportion of the articles published in this journal come under the heading of applied research. In this field research findings impact tomorrow's products, and so it's important to keep tabs on these developments. Grant applications, for example, can carry extra weight when the potential benefits to industry are outlined alongside the gains to fundamental science. What's more, it's just plain interesting to track how key breakthroughs in understanding can drive improvements in commercial devices.
