Senior Editor Alexander E. Braun interviewed industry mainstay Arthur Zafiropoulo, chairman and CEO of Ultratech. Recognized for both his leadership skills and technical expertise throughout the semiconductor industry since 1965, Zafiropoulo became president of Ultratech Inc. in 1990, later led the management buy-out, and subsequently drove one of the industry's most successful IPOs, for which VLSI Research Inc. inducted him into the Semiconductor Industry Hall of Fame. On the occasion of Ultratech's 30th anniversary, Zafiropoulo talks about his career and focuses on some of today's technology developments in the areas of EUV lithography, metrology, 3-D integration, and the perils of losing more markets to foreign manufacturers.
