At the semicon~® west foundry summit, heldrnin July at the show in San Francisco, we gathered executives from major foundries around the world to discuss their outlook on thee state of the business, and what to look for in the near future.rnThis was an information-packed event, with representatives from IBM, GlobalFoundries, Chartered, and SMIC laying out their views of the changes that have occurred recently, and what they expect will happen soon. The overall message that I took from this session was that the foundry model still works very well, that running a foundry is increasingly expensive and difficult, and the foundries are critical as more and more companies go to a fabless or fab-lite business model.
