Development of SUMIBORON PCBN Tool for Machining of Sintered Powder Metal Alloys and Cast Iron

SUMIBORON PCBN tools are widely used in the cutting of hard-to-cut ferrous materials such as hardened steel, cast iron and sintered powder metal (PM), and contribute to productivity growth and cost reduction for metalworking. In recent automotive industry, PM material consumption is increasing. PM materials allow high degree of freedom of material design and can be used to form complex shapes. However, machinability of PM parts is not so good. Therefore, the demand for PCBN cutting tools with higher precision performance and longer tool life has increased. The authors have succeeded in developing new SUMIBORON BN700, which has the highest CBN contents among the present product line and excellent binding force between CBN particles. BN700 is suitable for machining of various PM parts. Moreover, BN700 shows longer tool life in high-speed cast iron machining than conventional CBN grades. The development and the performance of BN700 are described in this report.
