The environmental burden of covering materials of wires and cables has been a great concern in recent years. Aiming to reduce this burden, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed and released a PVC-free power supply cable for electric equipments called cabtire cord. Insulation and sheath materials for this application require both high flexibility and excellent heat deformation resistance. Many kinds of PVC-free compounds have been developed in the past, but flexibility of these materials is insufficient, and therefore the conventional PVC-free cabtire cords using these compounds are not widely accepted in the market. Sumitomo Electric has developed a new type of PVC-free material for cabtire cords that satisfies both flexibility and heat deformation requirements for electric equipment application utilizing polymer alloy technology.
