Transparency without Tears: A Pragmatic Approach to Transparent Security Studies Research

Transparency has much to offer the qualitative study of international security, but practical considerations are crucial if there is to be any hope of widespread adoption. To manage the costs, scholars should adopt pragmatic standards and integrate transparency practices into their data collection, analysis, and writing routines. At the same time, leveraging scholars' existing practices for capturing, storing, organizing, and maintaining data offers promise in helping to establish transparency as a norm. Only with feasible standards and a recognition of limits can a pragmatic transparency norm emerge, so that individual scholars and the field as a whole can reap the benefits.
