I'm from Brooklyn, N.Y. As far back as I remember, I wanted to be an engineer. I guess when I was about 14,1 got my first summer youth job working in New York City at the Maritime Workshop, a nonprofit organization teaching inner-city kids job skills. I was actually part of the first group of kids to go through the program. I ended up going to a community college in New York City and, because of budget cuts, they cut my major twice. The CEO [chief executive officer] of the program recommended the SUNY [State University of New York] Maritime College to me. He took me up there [to the Bronx, N.Y], showed me the college, I spent the night and I felt it was a good place to go. I enrolled that semester.
