The summer before last, while attending the biennial meetings of the International Primatological Society in Madison, Wisconsin, I discovered that some unusual primates lived right down the road. The Milwaukee County Zoo, about an hour's drive from Madison, houses one of the very few captive colonies of bonobo chimpanzees. What an opportunity, I thought. I wasn't soon likely to visit the wilds of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and yet close at hand were some of the most elusive and fascinating apes on earth. Like most of the public, I am familiar with common chimpanzees from Jane Goodall's National Geographic specials, and as a prima-tologist, I have also read volumes of academic reports on the behavior and ecology of common chimpanzees from several different populations.
