A large rock may fall out of the sky and end life as we know it sometime soon. Or maybe not. Greenhouse gases, melting ice caps and rising sea levels may turn Manhattan into New Venice. Methane-breathing human-cyborg hybrids may commute from their rent-controlled canal-front apartments by gondola and submarine. But of all predictions, blithe or dire, the best bet-besides the survival of New York City's rent controls-is that one thing will never change: with extreme regularity, egg will appear on the face of someone who ought to have known better. And just as surely, when it hap-pens, it will bring a smile to close friends, colleagues-and especially relatives.
