Voltaire is said to have been fond of remarking that doctors pour drugs of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, into human beings of whom they know nothing. Physicians have learned much about drugs and diseases since the eighteenth century, but their patients have remained elusive. Some people respond well to a medication; in others the same drug provokes a dangerous, even fatal, reaction. Who will be harmed and who healed? Until recently, it's been impossible to know.
