The WEST COAST in 1998: 'An abundance of career opportunities...A shortage of applicants...'

Ask almost any human resources professional or scientist in the biopharmaceutical industry for a capsule description of the West Coast job market these days, and the same dynamic, energetic portrait appears. The birthplace of biotechnology has job openings aplenty, and too few applicants. Biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms are no longer just turning to the East Coast and beckoning talented men and women westward. Increasingly, their gaze is shifting overseas, with hopes of filling empty seats at the laboratory bench with scientists from Europe and the Far East. Employers also are turning to a relatively new kind of organization on the biotech jobs scene, the dedicated temporary staffing agency. To get a better sense of the West Coast market, we visited with Gilead Sciences and Protein Design Labs, and then got the latest on temporary scientific staffing from Kelly Scientific Resources.
