Carbon Nanotube Muscles

The conversion of mechanical work in- to electrical energy is one of the lega- cies of Michael Faraday. We have also inherited the unit "farad" to measure capac- itance and the term "faradaic" to mean electron transfer for electrode to elec- troactive species in electrochemistry. These terms are part of the intellectual back- ground of the report from Baughman et al. (1) on page 1340 of this issue on the use of nanotubes for electromechanical actuators.
