By a very wide margin, the East Coast is home to most of the industrial science in the United States. Almost all of the top 50 pharmaceutical companies are west of the Mississippi. And although California may be the cradle of biotech, the East Coast, according to Biotech 96, Ernst & Young's tenth annual industry report, has six of the top eleven biotech centers in the United States, including New England (second, with 177 companies), the Mid-Atlantic States (third with 111), New York (fifth with 84), New Jersey (seventh with 65), the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley area (eighth with 60), and North Carolina (eleventh with 47). When scientists look for jobs, then, most will go east. What does 1996 look like from there? And what should job-seekers be considering as they ready their portfolios? Plus Ca Change. In 1995 a now-familiar pattern continued among the traditional pharmaceutical companies: merger, downsizing, reshaping, and regrouping. Glaxo Holdings acquired Burroughs Wellcome plc to create Glaxo Wellcome, the world's largest drug company. Hoechst AG acquired Marion Merrell Dow, the world's third largest. Such activity will continue in 1996.
