The Hayward fault on the east side of San Francisco Bay creeps continuously at the surface at an average rate of about 5 millimeters per year, deforming buildings and cracking pavement, aqueducts, the University of California at Berkeley football stadium, and anything else unlucky enough to lie across its active trace.
