At a time when most medical findings seem to take place at the molecular level, it is refreshing to read the fascinating story of Rose Frisch's unfolding discovery of the relation between body fat and fertility. Reading more like a memoir than a scientific discussion, Female Fertility and the Body Fat Connection provides an autobiographical look at the 30-plus years Frisch spent studying this relationship. Though her discovery is elegant in its simplicity, it was met with silence and hostility by most clinical researchers. It is most fitting that this book is part of the University of Chicago Press's Women in Culture and Society series, as it deals not only with a distinctly female experience, menstruation, but also tells the story of one woman's path-breaking work amid the discomfort of many male colleagues.
