Zinc-Zinc Bonds: A New Frontier

The ability of metal atoms to bind to other atoms of the same element in molecular compounds plays an important role in chemistry. Furthermore, the nature of such "homonuclear" metal-metal bonds is often unusual. For example, molybdenum and tungsten can form metal-metal quadruple bonds, compared to the triple-bond maximum for nonmetals. Other metals, such as gold, can form metal-metal bonds even when there are no unpaired electrons available to do so.
