Coral Reefs and the Global Network of Marine Protected Areas

Coral reefs worldwide are suffering massive declines in their diversity in response to human activities. The accelerating decay of this and other marine and terrestrial ecosystems has motivated multinational efforts to reduce biodiversity loss such as the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2003 World Parks Congress. The latter recommends that 20 to 30% of all major ecosystems should lie within strictly protected reserves by 2012.
