EXPLORING ALTERNATIVES IN MYANMAR'S WILD NORTH

Ask Burmese how they feel about China, and you're likely to get an earful about the hunger of their northern neighbor for Myanmar's timber, gas, and other natural resources. But an unusual new venture in sustainable development in the Shan State of northeastern Myanmar, just across the border from China, could be a small step in improving China's image—and a leap in both local living standards and access for scientists to a biodiversity hot spot.
