Books on quantum mechanics are often organized more in terms of what is easy to understand and calculate than in terms of what actually applies to the world at large. They typically contain much discussion from the perspective of the time-independent Schrodinger equation (TISE), HΨ(x) = EΨ(x). This equation determines the allowed stationary states of a system (defined by its Hamil-tonian operator, H), which could be anything from a particle such as an electron to a complex molecule containing many atoms.
