After Initial Reforms, French Minister Promises More Changes

French Higher Education and Research minister Valerie Pecresse has survived her first big political test. In November and December, students organized occupations and strikes at almost half of France's universities to demand the repeal of the "Pecresse Law." Designed to give universities more autonomy and part of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to revamp the nation's research, the law had been presented in June and was approved by France's Parliament in August.
