Young Teachers Hear Importance of Standards

Acorps of promising young teachers got expert insight on the drive for the next generation of mathematics and science standards during the annual meeting of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program.rnIn June, a consortium of education and mathematics experts released new standards for K-12 mathematics education in the United States. The standards have already been adopted by 25 states as of mid-July.rnMeanwhile, the U.S. National Research Council completed a draft conceptual framework for science education standards and on 12 July submitted it for public comment. Once finalized, the nonprofit education group, Achieve, will coordinate the use of this framework to develop more explicit standards. The National Science Teachers Association and AAAS are supporting partners in these efforts, and the Carnegie Corporation of New York is providing financial support.
