Lowering the Boom on Financial Conflicts

After a year of review, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has unveiled a plan for cracking down on conflicts of interest in bio-medical research. Pressured by Congress, NIH last week released proposed changes to a 15-year-old regulation affecting everybody who receives U.S. Public Health Service money-about 40,500 grantees. The changes would require researchers to report more financial information to their employers, have the institutions and not researchers decide when a conflict exists, and make some of the reported information public.
