In 1832, a lost Japanese junk wrecked on the rocky coast of Washington state, more than 5000 kilometers from home, and the local Native Americans promptly enslaved the surviving crew. Officials at the Hudson's Bay Company ordered the sailors rescued, and they were subsequently sent to Britain as pawns in the effort to open Japan to British trade.
