Sally Ride Dead at 61

Astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel to outer space, died this week of pancreatic cancer. The intensely private Ride, an astrophysicist, graduated from Stanford University in California in 1978; the same year, she joined NASA as an astronaut candidate, one of six women chosen as the first female candidates.
