Hopkins Biochemist to Head NIH's Basic Science Institute

Jon Lorsch, a biochemist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, will become director of the $2.4 billion National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) in August. Lorsch, 44, uses yeast to study how cells initiate the translation of RNA into proteins. He will join NIGMS, the National Institutes of Health's fourth largest institute, as NIH is coping with a 5% budget cut from sequestration.
