A pioneering Spanish stem cell center is surrounded by questions in the wake of its leader's departure. Developmental biologist Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte last week stepped down as the director of the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB), which he helped create almost a decade ago with support from the Catalan and Spanish governments. Izpisua Belmonte was personally involved in most of the research projects at the center while also a professor at the Gene Expression Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California.
