It is estimated that one to two percent of the world population has diabetes mellitus, a condition defined as an elevated level of glucose in the blood. Although high blood sugar alone infrequently produces symptoms, over time the high levels of glucose cause damage to blood vessels and nerves, leading to heart disease, kidney failure, and blindness.
