Unusually, in this issue there are only three newcomers to the Hot Ten and they are the bottom three. At #8 is one that reports graphene sheets, which are flat layers made entirely of carbon atoms and with the ability to conduct electricity. The paper comes from a group headed by SonBinh Nguyen and Rodney Ruoff of Northwestern University, Illinois. They have found a way of separating graphite into single layers of graphene by reducing graphite oxide with hydrazine hydrate.
