What Can We Expect from Biotechnology in the 21st Century?

Just like the electronics technology including computers that drastically changed the world economy in the latter half of the 20th century, biotechnology based on knowledge of life sciences is seen bringing about major changes and progress in society in the 21st century. Until now lagging behind American and European bioindustries, the first step towards a renewed effort that encompasses direction, strategy and structure, as represented by the Millennium Project, has been taken by Japan's bioindustry, with the support of the government and related organizations.
