HEART Project: Qualitative Industrial Revolution in the 21st Century

Biotechnology has been applied to a wide range of industries: chemicals, food processing, mining and manufacturing, resources and energy, electronics, information and so on. Moreover, with possible solutions to various environmental problems, it promises to be a key technology for building up a sustainable economy and society. On August 23, 1999, executive managers of 31 concerned leading companies inaugurated the Strategic Forum for Green Biotechnology sponsored by the Japan Bioin-dustry Association. The Forum issued a long-term outlook last February entitled "Green Biotechnology: Feasibility and Strategic Initiatives." The four-chapter document was written to address basic topic: Industrial Revolution in the 21st Century — Pursuing Economic Growth Compatible with Well-Preserved Nature and a High Quality of Life.
