Matsushita Electric Industrial has succeeded in developing the world's first optical converter using LED, POF(Plastic Optical Fiber), and H-PCF (Hard Polymer Clad Fiber) for IEEE 1394 interface. This unit can transmit up to a 400Mbps digital signal over an extended distance. "By enabling the transmission of high-density images over a long distance, this development is a first step toward establishing digital network environments in the homes of the future," said Yoshiaki Kushiki, MEI director. "Matsushita Electric will continue its R&D efforts to develop advanced communications and will focus on this POF system as well as other networking technologies."
