Efforts by Japan to Create Biotechnological Industries

The scale of the biotechnology-related market in Japan, which was about 300 billion yen in 1990, has grown rapidly with an average growth rate of 15% p.a. in the nineties, and has now reached about 1 trillion yen and employs about 30,000 persons. Previous estimates have predicted that the share in 2010 will be about 10 trillion yen with about 150,000 employees. However in consideration of the recent rapid growth rates of over 20% a year in Europe and North America and the strengthening of efforts by the Japanese government and industry indicate that the market size in 2010 may have grown to as high as about 25 trillion yen.
